We recently visited the Cromwell Hospital in London, one of the capital’s most prestigious and advanced private hospitals, after The Private Healthcare Company was invited in for a tour.
Opened in 1981, the hospital has built a strong reputation for clinical excellence and medical innovation. Seeing what happens within those corridors was an incredible experience.
While we are all aware that private health insurance is designed to beat the long NHS wait times, it can sometimes be easy to overlook just how advanced the private healthcare industry has become.
We were welcomed at reception, where their focus was immediately on patient comfort and reassurance. The environment felt closer to a high-end hotel than a traditional hospital, with concierge-style staff supporting patients through every stage of their visit.
During the tour, we had the opportunity to speak with a range of specialists and surgeons, gaining insight into the patient journey from a clinical perspective. Their ability to combine advanced diagnostic tools with personalised care pathways was particularly impressive.
One of the standout elements was the use of the robotic-assisted surgery, including systems such as the da Vinci surgical system, which allows surgeons to control robotic arms with high precision for minimally invasive procedures.
We also discussed ongoing developments in robotic-assisted surgery and telesurgery, including a landmark case reported by the BBC in March 2026, where a surgeon in London performed a remote robotic procedure on a patient in Gibraltar. Although this was a specific and unique case, it demonstrates how rapidly the technology is evolving.
The whole experience also provided a wider perspective on the healthcare system as a whole. It is clear how hard NHS staff continue to work under increasing pressure, delivering exceptional care in challenging circumstances. At the same time, rising healthcare costs and growing demand mean it is understandable that people are considering their options when it comes to insurance and accessing treatment.
Private health insurance is not something most people think they will need, but it can provide valuable reassurance when it matters most. For those who choose it, it offers fast access to specialist care, advanced treatment and diagnostic options, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing support is available when needed.

The visit was kindly arranged and hosted by Bupa, which owns and operates the Cromwell Hospital. While it is one of Bupa’s flagship private hospitals, it is not exclusive to Bupa members, and it accepts patients insured by all major UK private health insurers.
